From the Headlines: General Assembly - Down To The Wire; Childhood Obesity

We'll look at the top stories of the week including the latest news from the General Assembly.  The days are winding down for lawmakers.  What's next now that the Virginia Supreme Court rules Regional Transportation Authorities unconstitutional?  We'll also talk about new regional efforts to fight the growing epidemic facing Hampton Roads' children-childhood obesity. The condition threatens children’s health and can even shorten their lives.  Tune in to hear what your neighbors and friends have to say as we open our lines to the voices of Hampton Roads.

Pieces of the Puzzle
Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills.  Now there appears to be a rise in the number of children being diagnosed with autism.  On today's HearSay, we'll profile a local family's journey with autism and highlight a new project to raise funds for the summer camp “CampGonnaWannaGoAgain" and creation of vocational training program for autistic children as they get older and require day care or skill training.

Pentagon South
Estimates show defense spending makes up about a third of the regional economy, and that figure is not expected to to taper off any time soon. To position Hampton Roads as a regional defense and homeland security superpower, a growing group of city development officials and local defense contractors are pursuing a new branding strategy that crowns the area "Pentagon South".   What does this mean for our workforce?  We'll examine it on today's HearSay.

Law and Order

The city of Chesapeake will hire an independent consultant to review the Police Department's procedures, policies and staffing levels.  This after many concerns from citizens following the shooting death of Chesapeake Detective Jarrod Shivers while executing a drug search warrant on a home in the city's Portlock section.  Join us for discussion of police procedures on today's HearSay.
