SEGMENT A: THE GIVING
Since 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, Americans have dug deep into their pockets to reach out to those in need. On today's HearSay, we'll look at philanthropy in our community. Cathy's guests are Dr. Claire Gaudiani, New York University Professor and author of The Greater Good: How Philanthropy Drives the American Economy and Can Save Capitalism, Angelica Light, president and CEO of The Norfolk Foundation, and Dr. Bruce Rubin, Old Dominion University Associate Professor of Finance and head of the Economics Club of Hampton Roads.

SEGMENT B: WIRED FOR LIFE
Studies have shown that quality early childhood care and education are critical to life-long success and have a positive impact on economic vitality. Learning begins in infancy and every child deserves a good start in a safe, healthy and supportive environment. What can our community do to assure all children receive the education tools they need in crucial formative years? We'll explore the issue on today's HearSay with guests Carla Javier, Co-Director of the Kids First Coalition, Sarah Bishop, Director of the United Way of South Hampton Roads Success by 6 program, and Hunter Creech, Vice President of Finance at Branscome, Inc.

HEARSAY CLASSIC: PATRIOTISM OR PROFIT?
Their business is supplying security in an unsafe world. Training modern day mercenaries means big profit for private military companies and also helps ease the strain of an over-taxed military. But not everyone thinks this new approach is the best way to wage war. On today's HearSay, we revisit our conversation discussing private armies with Virginian-Pilot Reporter Bill Sizemore, Doug Brooks, President of the International Peace Operations Association, Marine Colonel Thomas Hammes (Ret.) author of Sling and Stone: On War in the 21st Century, and Marcela Gaviria, co-producer of the Frontline Program "Private Warriors".

HEARSAY CLASSIC: ISRAEL ON THE APPOMATOX
Long before the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation, a community of liberated blacks lived on Israel Hill, Prince Edward County. There, ex-slaves established farms, navigated the Appomattox River, and became entrepreneurs. Today on HearSay, Cathy talks with Professor Melvin Ely, Newton Family Professor of History and Black Studies at the College of William and Mary and author of Israel on the Appomatox: A Southern Experiment in Black Freedom from the 1790's to the Civil War, about this remarkable community and it’s legacy.
