HD Radio

89.5 WHRV-FM and 90.3 WHRO-FM, WHRO, have been broadcasting in HD radio since 2005. Now most of our satellite stations are also available in HD. These include:

88.5 WHRG, Gloucester Point/Mathews and 91.9 WHRE, Eastville (repeating WHRV); and 89.9 WHRJ, Gloucester Courthouse (repeating WHRO-FM). 90.1 WHRX, Nassawadox will begin high-power HD broadcasting in 2012 repeating WHRV, and 98.3 WHRF, Belle Haven, will also begin HD broadcasts in 2012 repeating WHRO-FM.

HD Radio is a technology that enables radio stations to broadcast their programs digitally, both a sonic improvement in audio as well as a major change in programming diversity. Signal fading, static, hisses and pops are a thing of the past. Data services such as displayed song and artist information, weather and traffic alerts and much more will revolutionize the way you experience radio. And it's all FREE, just like analog FM broadcasts have been for years.

What are the benefits of HD Radio?

  • FM broadcasts have CD-quality sound.
  • Static-free without pops, hiss and fades.
  • Multiple new program channels: On WHRV HD-2, SpeakEasy brings you additional quality programs for NPR, APM and PRI, plus international broadcasts. WHRV HD-3 is AltRadio, an alternative music service which features new un-played artists mixed with cult classics. On WHRO-FM HD-2, you find Connoisseur Classics, featuring rare and seldom heard recordings, All Opera Tuesdays and continuous Holiday classics during December. WHRO-FM HD-3 is the 1920’s Radio Network, with Big Band, Swing, and nostalgia radio shows. Plus there are new data services, such as scrolling text displayed on a radio screen with song titles, artist names, iTunes Tagging letting you identify and download favorites, traffic updates, weather forecasts, sports scores and more.
  • No subscription fees. Its FREE for consumers, just like today's analog AM and FM radio.
  • Pricing and availability of HD radios is improving every year. Factory HD radios are now available in Ford, Toyota, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Volvo, Hyundai, Lincoln, Mini, Subaru, Volkswagen, Audi, Land Rover, Scion, Jaguar, Kia, Rolls Royce and Tesla vehicles.
  • Aftermarket car audio offers HD pricing from $150 up. Some HD home receivers list for under $100. The best sources for HD radios, car or home, are Amazon.com, The NPR Store or Crutchfield.com. Crutchfield offers on-line technical support and user testimonials.
  • HD radios offer different features, so shop carefully. For example, if you are looking to receive the additional audio programs, please be sure the receiver you choose is able to play “HD Sub channels”.
  • Many Home Theater Receivers now also offer built-in HD reception. This is great for quality home listening. Brands such as Denon, Sony and Yamaha are just a few.
